- YORK Betty Jean (Taylor) Grothe, 81, formerly of New Freedom, died Friday, December 27, 2013, at Dallastown Nursing Center. She was the wife of Theodore L. "Ted" Grothe. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom. A funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary with the Rev. Dennis Schulze officiating. Interment will follow the service in New Freedom Cemetery. Born November 30, 1932, at Bentley Springs, Md., Betty Jean was the daughter of the late Adam Eugene and Nora Lillian (Simpson) Taylor. Betty Jean retired in 1994 from the Parkton, Md., Post Office. She was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association and a member of Bentley Springs United Methodist Church, Parkton, Md. In her early years she liked sewing and enjoyed gardening. In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, Theodore L. Grothe, Jr., and Susan J. Lopez and her husband, Vincent, all of York, Donald G. Grothe of Seven Valleys, and Barry K. Grothe and his wife, Christine of Conesville, Iowa; and four grandchildren, Christopher, Corey, and Abigail Grothe, and Jeremy Lopez. She is also survived by two great-grandsons, Dylan Grothe and Trent Lopez; and one step great-grandson, Kyle Burton. She was preceded in death by 11 siblings, Eugene, Edgar, Clarence, and Kenneth Taylor, Margaret Smith, Blanche McCormick, Lilly Houston, Elva Lentz, Reba Rosier, Mary Brown, and Dorothy Barnett. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bentley Springs United Methodist Church, 419 Bentley Road, Parkton, MD 21120.
