- RED LION Donald Burnell Orwig, 82, husband of the late Mildred A. (Schnetzka) Orwig, his wife of 44 years, died Monday, September 8, 2014, at the Barbara J. Egan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Shrewsbury. A viewing will be held 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2014, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main St., Dallastown. The Funeral Service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Roger H. Mentzer officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Rinely, with Military Honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Donald was born November 25, 1931, in Hungerford, a son of the late Emory C. and Edna M. (McClain) Orwig. Donald served in the United States Army with the 3rd Signal Company during the Korean Conflict, attaining the rank of Sgt. He also served temporary duty assignments with several special service organizations including C.I.D. Donald worked in sales for the former W.L. Sterner Hardware Co. He was previously employed by the former R.K.B. Enterprises, Herr and Co., H.W.I Inc., and P.A. & S. Small Co. During his high school years, Donald worked for the former Charles G. Summers Canning Factory. He also worked part-time as a P.I.A.A. official, York County Emergency Management and the Elections Board. Donald enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also enjoyed spending time with his former high school classmates and traveling with senior citizen groups. Surviving Donald are daughter, Jan M. Jay and her husband David of Dallastown; sons, Jay Orwig and his wife Kathi of Dallastown, Joel Orwig and his wife Eve of Belgium, Wisc.; grandchildren, Adam Orwig, Kellyn Hood, Lt. Brandon Jay, Sarah Orwig and Elizabeth Orwig; great-granddaughters, Maggey Hood and Kylie Orwig; brother, Dale Orwig of Jarrettsville, Md. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his late wife and parents, Donald was preceded in death by his grandson, Garrett Jay, and sister, Phyllis Orwig. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross York-Adams, 724 S. George St., York, PA 17401. J.J. Hartenstein Mortuary, Inc., 24 N. Second St., New Freedom, is in charge of arrangements.
